Question:

I would like to create a “Full Width” header graphic that scales with the width of the browser/screen size.

Example:

Answer:

1) Create a regular SmallBiz header graphic (960 x 150) with colors of your choice.
See here for details: http://userguide.expand2web.com/creating-and-adding-your-own-header-graphic/

2) Use your favorite image editing software (such as Photoshop) and create an image to match your header graphic colors and height. Keep in mind the 20px margin above the header and 30px menu height. The image only needs to be 30-40px wide as it will be horizontally repeated using WordPress’s settings later on.

3) Log in to WordPress. Go to Appearance -> Background and upload you new image. Make sure to set the image to repeat itself horizontally.

4) Remove the rounded corners and drop shadow from your Menu.

1) Log into WordPress
2) Click on “Appearance” -> “Editor”
3) A file called “style.css” should load by default. If not select it from the bottom of the file list on the right.
4) Type or copy/paste the following:
#access {box-shadow:none; border-bottom-left-radius: 0px; border-bottom-right-radius: 0px;}

All SmallBiz Theme Pages created with the SmallBiz Facebook App will work with the new Timeline in Facebook.
If you don’t want to – you do not need to change anything!

Example of a “old” 520px wide Facebook page displayed using the new wider timeline settings:

Question:

I have an existing site and I would like to take advantage of the extra 260px in width that I gain by switching to Timeline.

Answer:

SmallBiz Theme 3.8.2 (Release Date 03.28.12) and up already have the Page Templates set for the new wider Timeline format. No actions are needed.

For SmallBiz Theme 3.8.1 and older – you can quickly and easily change the width of your existing SmallBiz Theme Facebook Page templates directly within WordPress.

1) Log into WordPress and click on “Appearance -> Editor”

2) In the file lost on the right you will see three Facebook Page Templates

3) Open and edit one template at a time by clicking on the template name.

4) You need to change the width of each of the three templates from 520px to 780px in three locations on each template.

<img src="http://userguide.expand2web.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/change520-780.png" alt="change520-780" title="change520-780" width="699" height="605" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1405"style="border: 1px solid #000;" />

5) Repeat for “Facebook Page – with Menu Page Template” and “Facebook Reveal Page Page Template”

The 4 text boxes don’t align properly under the Slideshow.

Answer:

The Rotator layout is designed to automatically expand and wrap text around the slideshow when additional text is added.
However, the text wrapping may negatively affect the lower 4 text boxes should there be only a small amount of text or a bullet list as shown in the example above.

Solution: Assign a fixed height to your text box.

1) Log into WordPress
2) Click on “Appearance” -> “Editor”
3) A file called “style.css” should load by default. If not select it from the bottom of the file list on the right.
4) Type or copy/paste the following (adjust the height to your needs)
#wraptop {height: 300px;}

Question:

My Webiste is loading slow – what can I do?

Answer:

1) Check your image size(s).

Make sure you resize all your images using image editing software such as Photoshop to the correct size before uploading them to WordPress. Don’t let WordPress handle the resizing via html code – it will still ooad the full image file size. Be especially careful about the file size when using full width background images on your site.

2) Check for slow loading Plugins.

Check your site using PingDom Tools. Look for big slow javascript files often used by image gallery and slider plugins.

3) Remove CSS inclusion (SmallBiz 3.8.0 and older only)

Remove the backwards compatibility file from the SmallBiz Theme. This file is no longer used and can cause slow load times on some hosting servers. Note newer versions of SmallBiz 3.8.x do no longer have this file.

4) If steps 1-3 don’t change your load times get in touch with your hosting providers tech support and be persistent to get a good answer. Keep in mind that if you have several websites with the same host that they are likely not all sitting on the same physical server (even though it appears to you like they do). If your site is on a shared server with super high traffic neighbors it can affect your load times too.

Question:

I would like to add an image into my header that is linked to a certain page or site.

<img src="http://userguide.expand2web.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/image-in-header.jpg" alt="SmallBiz Theme linked image in header" title="SmallBiz Theme linked image in header" width=450" />

Answer – Option 1: Have the image show up on every Page and Post

1) Log into WordPress
2) Go to “Media” -> “Add New” and upload your image. Copy the generated image URL.
3) Go to “Appearance” -> “Editor”
4) Select Header (header.php) from the file list on the right.
5) Add a div tag with absolute positioning above the #sitewrap div
Note: You will need to adjust the position margins to your image and header!

Answer – Option 2: Have the image show up only on the Homepage

1) Log into WordPress
2) Go to “Media” -> “Add New” and upload your image. Copy the generated image URL.
3) Go to “Appearance” -> “Editor”
4) Select Header (header.php) from the file list on the right.
5) Add PHP code (see screenshot & below) to check if the page is the homepage
6) Add a div tag with absolute positioning above the #sitewrap div
Note: You will need to adjust the position margins to your image and header!

Important Note: Different browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome etc.) all render “absolute positioning” slightly different. Your results may vary. This post is just a “general” how to intended for experienced users.
