Fixing Render Problems in Internet Explorer

Why does my website look different in Internet Explorer?

Internet Explorer (short name “IE”) was written with loose interpretation of very strict standards for how web sites are coded.

Browsers such as Firefox, Safari, Chrome etc are far more compliant to these strict standards since those are open source developed by people who know what they’re doing (pun intended) for the core elements of the browser.

Adhering to standards is what makes Firefox, Safari, Chrome etc. render pretty much all the same.

Note: All default Layouts, Images and Text Boxes in the SmallBiz Theme will display correctly in all versions of Internet Explorer version 7 and up as well as all other standard Browsers. We cannot guarantee for end-user customized websites

How to fix my site to show correctly in Internet Explorer?

The SmallBiz Theme has stylesheets that are only loaded by Internet Explorer and ignored by all other browsers.

To provide you with even more control we included a “general” IE stylesheet and a “IE 7” specific stylesheet. Why IE7? Because IE7 is known to render sites differently from IE8 and IE9.

How to access Internet Explorer Specific Stylesheets?

Use an FTP Client (learn about FTP here) or Filemanager (provided by your hosting provider).

Navigate to to the CSS folder found within the SmallBiz Theme:
Filepath: yourdomain/wp-content/themes/smalbiz/css

Within the CSS folder look for: “ie.css” and “ie7.css”

Adjust the css and add css to your needs.

How do I know the name of div tags I need to adjust?

We highly recommend a tool called “Firebug” which is a Addon for Firefox.

It will tell you all file names, div tags and associated css.
